The city of Piedmont is one of the most coveted neighborhoods to purchase a home in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is bordered by Oakland and nestled in the lush Oakland Hills, but is its own city with its own police department, city government and school district. This small community of roughly 10,000 residents is just two square miles but is teeming with luxury, excellent schools, beautiful homes, and opportunity. It is truly in the center of it all, and a quick commute to Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley and the South Bay.
Piedmont’s architecture is comprised of impeccably maintained stately mansions and Craftsman bungalows. In the early 20th century Piedmont was known as the “City of Millionaires”, so it is no surprise that there are many beautifully kept mansions bordering the picturesque tree-lined streets. Piedmont real estate has historically maintained exceptional market value, and will continue to do so.
This city is truly a special place. Not only are the homes beautiful with panoramic views of the entire San Francisco Bay, but also there is a sense of community that is difficult to achieve in any modern metropolis. Although Piedmont is in the center of it all, you feel like you are in a small town surrounded by community members who care about you and your family. This is evident in the active members within the school district and in the community activities that are happening year round, like the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and the 4th of July parade.
There is a small central shopping area, however most residents take advantage of the close proximity to Oakland’s popular Piedmont Avenue. Piedmont Ave. is a quick drive away, but is filled with restaurants, cafes, yoga and exercise studios and gourmet grocery stores that will impress even the most jaded gourmand or socialite!
Location & Commute
Piedmont is located within the Oakland Hills. While it is its own city, it is bordered by Oakland. Berkeley, San Francisco and the North and South Bay are easily accessible from Piedmont as it is between Highway 13 and 580. However, it is most practical to have a car and not rely on public transportation to quickly commute from Piedmont to the surrounding areas.
Piedmont is adjacent to Oakland’s busy Piedmont Ave. The popular Grand Lake District of Oakland is to the west of the city of Piedmont. Oakland’s Montclair District is also a fantastic shopping and culinary hub that is on the eastern border of Piedmont.
Piedmont is one of the most sought after areas to live in the Bay Area precisely because of their impressive public schools. Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) is a k-12 school district that ranks number 1 in Northern California and number 4 in the entire state on California’s Academic Performance Index. It has some of the best pubic schools in the entire nation. This is a major attraction to homeowners as the vast majority choose to send their children to public schools for this very reason. There are three elementary schools: Havens, Wildwood and Beach. Piedmont Middle School is the middle school in PUSD. There are two high schools, Millennium, and Piedmont High School. The vast majority (nearly 100%) of Piedmont High School students are college bound. There is active parent involvement within all of the schools, demonstrating further the community engagement that makes this city a special place to live in and raise a family.
While the public schools in PUSD are some of the best in the nation, there are many private schools in the area. Here is a link to private schools in the surrounding area.
