Jack London Square is a vibrant Oakland neighborhood in the middle of all the action along the beautiful Oakland/Alameda estuary. The district is filled with young creative professionals who take advantage of the surrounding community activities, restaurants and outdoor space. There are newly built beautiful condos with luxury amenities, as well as refurbished former warehouses that are now luxury lofts.
The neighborhood was aptly named after the innovative and successful author Jack London, who pondered many of his novels at the local watering hole, Heinhold’s First and Last Chance Saloon (also Oakland’s oldest bar which still remains even after the 1906 earthquake!) The neighborhood represents a cross section of Oakland’s past history as the first major seaport on the Pacific Coast (it still remains the nation’s fifth busiest container port) and its current evolution as a revitalized neighborhood that is a travel destination in itself.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy all that Jack London Square has to offer. There are parks along the estuary to run, bike and walk while taking in the beautiful views of the Bay. If you are a bit more adventurous you can also kayak in the estuary, and there are many slips to dock sailboats and yachts along the Oakland waterfront. There are also many dog parks nearby, and some condos offer private dog parks; this is a very dog-friendly neighborhood!
Jack London Square has an active community behind it planning monthly activities including outdoor movie nights, live music and dance lessons, popular annual events like the Eat Real Fest, and a weekly Sunday farmer’s market. This is the place to live if you are looking to get to know your neighbors and hang out over a glass of wine at one of the amazing restaurant patios along the waterfront. This area is teeming with restaurants, local wineries and beer gardens celebrating the culinary bounty of the Bay. Whether it is a cup of specialty coffee from Blue Bottle, a glass of wine from Rosenblum Cellars, or fresh oysters from Jack’s Oyster Bar, there is simply something for everyone among the roster of gourmet restaurants and shops.
Location & Commute
Jack London Square is located along the estuary in Oakland, just south of Interstate 880. While the entire Jack London District encompasses more than 70 blocks of Oakland waterfront, Jack London Square is a small community in the heart of it all.
One of the area’s best qualities is that it is centrally located in Oakland and close to every form of transportation. Commuters can easily access 880 in order to get to San Francisco, and the North and South Bays. Most condos offer covered parking which can be helpful as parking can be difficult during peak times and events. Residents can walk to the Amtrak station that is in the center of Jack London and commute via train. The ferry terminal is also in the middle of Jack London Square with daily ferry rides to San Francisco for commuters and day-trippers. There is also a nearby BART station at Lake Merritt.
